Vein Affiliates is an organization of surgically trained specialists with additional expertise in treating venous disease (Varicose veins and Spider veins).
Our organization is committed to quality care, ongoing education, and research in the field of venous disease. Patients considering treatment for vein problems should consult with a highly trained vein specialist who is familiar with all aspects of venous disease. Our members are at the forefront of advances in spider vein treatment and varicose vein treatment options.
Varicose Veins
Depending on the system that is involved, many times we are able to use a laser to treat the cause of the varicose vein. If a patient has saphenous insufficiency, meaning the saphenous vein is not working as well as it should, we are able to close this vein with a laser. This procedure has replaced the older method of stripping and is minimally invasive. All varicose vein treatments are performed in the office setting using a local anesthetic and normally requires about an hour. There is minimal to no discomfort after the procedure and normal activities may typically be resumed after the third day.
The large superficial bumps seen in varicose veins are gently removed with a procedure called micro-phlebectomy (or ambulatory phlebectomy). Tiny incisions are made after numbing with a small needle, and the vein is removed. This procedure is usually performed in conjunction with the laser.
Spider Veins
Spider veins are typically treated with a combination of laser treatment and injections. Injections (also referred to as sclerotherapy), is the gold standard for the treatment of spider veins. The sclerotherapy solution damages the vessel walls which results in the damaged spider vein being reabsorbed, similar to a bruise. The average patient requires 3 to 5 sessions that are spaced 1 month apart. Each procedure takes about 20 minutes with minimal to no discomfort.
